Food Dye Is Made Out of Crushed Bugs!

We sometimes go out and order some delicious stuff somewhere, not knowing how it’s made or what it’s made from. We don’t really care that often, and are satisfied as long as it tastes good.

However, it might be surprising to some that some food out there that is being legally sold to the public has bugs in the ingredients!

If you ever come across something that has either carmine, cochineal extract or natural red 4, then the product definitely has crushed bugs.

Simply, the natural dye is extracted from the bugs to decorate our food.

The extracted dye can be safely consumed by most humans, while it might provoke an allergic reaction in some cases.

The dye is also used in cosmetic products, and it takes around 70 thousands bugs to produce just one pound of it.

The Food and Drug Administration now requires manufacturers to explicitly write the ingredients on the products; not because they’re dangerous, but just because some people feel averted towards the fact that it’s actually made out of bugs; and others try their best to avoid animal-based products.

Bet you didn’t know that much about food ingredients, did you?
